Pranayotsav – A Collection of Poems by Lata Singh: Book Review

Poetry in its form not only entertains readers but also fills them with energy and life. It also moulds their perspective to see events in a different way. There is a similar experience by the readers when they read “Pranyotsav: Jeevan Utsav Hai!” by Lata Singh ‘Sarvapriya.’ In her collection of poems, the poet talks about various subjects, which range into the 5 sections she divides them. Every section explores poetry writing from a unique perspective and shows the different shades of the author’s poetic capabilities. There is a wide variety of subjects that the poet covers in her collection of more than 20 poems.

As the readers begin to read the poetry collection in “Pranyotsav,” they get to hear from the author as she introduces them to the poetry that she has written. The fact that some poems are deeply personal while some are mere observations while others are born from the individual but represent the collective make her poetry exceptional and one of its kind. Altogether, as the readers shift from one section to another, they also see how Singh’s poetic talent unfolds, and it comes across as multi-dimensional. In light of this, “Pranyotsav” comes across as a powerful piece of literary writing. The author uses the medium of the Hindi language to convey her thoughts which gives her poetry a strong flavour of Indianness and helps Indian readers relate strongly with it. Especially, the people who have Hindi as their mother tongue would find the work instantly relatable. This would be so because of both the language she uses in her thoughts and the subjects she discusses in her poems. These two go hand in hand throughout the poetry collection. Some poems become deeply personal when she is addressing the readers directly or a person who would read her thoughts later. Simultaneously, Singh’s poems are also from the point of view of a third person, which detaches her and also the reader and gives it a touch of practicality and realism.

It is interesting to observe the women-centric poems in the second section called “Aadhi aabaadi mera aks.” Although the poems are born from individual experience and a perspective that is more or less personal, yet the poems seem to be a reflection of the feelings and thoughts of half of the human race. This collective representation gives an idea of women’s minds and also the way they perceive and the perspectives with which they see things. Women would find the poetry collection strongly relatable, but this does not restrict the readership of Singh’s “Pranyotsav.” Men can read her poetry with equal joy and understand the mystery women are for many. At the same time, there are other poems in the later sections which explore the beauty of human relationships, life as a whole, and the multi-faceted nature of society in the other sections, namely “Lay zindagi ki,” “Raag rishto ka,” and “Darpan samaj ka.” Altogether, there is something or the other for every poetry lover to enjoy from Singh’s pen. Therefore, to understand Singh’s poetry, the readers have too go through every section separately.

The poems in “Pranyotsav” are collected in an interesting sequence which would appeal from youngers to elders sequentially as the ages increase. This sequential arrangement opens the work to reading by people of all ages, whether elder or younger. Every reader would find one poem or the other that would appeal to them and even such poems which they would suggest their friends and family for reading. In addition, the language that the author uses is also the kind that every reader can understand. She keeps the language simple and her words less. The length of the poems varies, but the thoughts they convey are pretty much clear, and the readers enjoy the poetry as they read through. In addition, the central message which to make the most out of every moment always pervades throughout the book. This fills the readers with positivity and motivates them to develop this philosophy. All readers should try reading “Pranyotsav” not just to observe the poetic capabilities of the poet but also to understand that there are a lot of little things to life in addition to the bigger picture.
