What happens when the pursuit of development comes at the cost of nature? And what can we do when the mountains that once symbolised peace and beauty begin to suffer from pollution, deforestation and environmental destruction?
In Aa…Ab Laut Chalein, Ishwar S. Chuphal gives voice to his concerns about the growing environmental crisis affecting mountainous regions, particularly Uttarakhand. Through his words, he reflects on the consequences of unchecked developmental activities, indiscriminate deforestation, landslides and increasing pollution. The book also touches upon broader social issues, encouraging readers to pause and consider the direction in which society is moving.
Rooted in the author’s deep connection with his homeland, the book serves as a heartfelt appeal to recognise the delicate relationship between human progress and the natural world. It invites readers to reflect on the importance of preserving the environment, protecting the mountains and rediscovering the values that connect us to our roots. More than an expression of concern, it is a reminder that development must go hand in hand with responsibility and respect for nature.
Born in Hupli village near the border region of Munsiyari in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, Ishwar Singh Chuphal served in the Indian Army’s 6 Kumaon Regiment for 15 years before spending approximately 22 years with Punjab National Bank. He retired as a Bank Officer in 2015 and then turned his attention to his long-cherished childhood passion for reading and writing. He describes his literary work as a humble expression of the thoughts and emotions that arise during moments of leisure, written primarily for personal fulfilment.
