An Interview with Kamalika Bhattacharya

Kamalika Bhattacharya is a gifted storyteller whose works span poetry, short fiction, and editorials. With a unique ability to capture the emotional landscapes of everyday life, Kamalika’s narratives are rich with drama, passion, and depth. Her latest book, Resilience Reborn | Strategies for Survival, showcases her talent for chronicling the strength and transformation of women navigating life’s toughest moments. Through compelling storytelling and emotional honesty, she shines a light on resilience, community, and the beauty of rebirth through adversity.

The Literature Times: Each chapter follows a different phase of resilience—cope, adapt, recover, and grow. How did you choose these themes and shape the women’s journeys around them?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: A: Women’s resilience and journeys are a testament to their strength. Despite all the challenges and obstacles, their ability to adapt and thrive makes them unique. Though being emotionally vulnerable, women often face societal expectations and stereotypes that limit their potential towards progress. We find various incidents around us, which don’t become the headline of a news portal, but they are equally captivating and are filled with challenges. We just need to be receptive and a little observant. Being observant allows us to recognise the quiet triumphs of women in our communities, from those balancing careers and family responsibilities to those advocating for change in their workplaces. Each story, though perhaps overlooked, contributes to a broader narrative of resilience and empowerment that deserves to be celebrated.

The Literature Times: How do you approach writing about deeply emotional or vulnerable experiences while keeping them authentic and relatable?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: Emotions play a crucial role in shaping our understanding and reliability of the primary emotions that are universally experienced. I believe in establishing emotions that can foster deeper connections and more meaningful relationships. I have a deep regard for people who are grounded and kind at heart. Observing such people often inspires me to dig a little deeper into their lives and understand their setbacks. Their resilience in the face of adversity often reveals profound insights about the human experience, reminding me that vulnerability can be a powerful tool for connection. By sharing our own stories of struggle and triumph, we create a space where authenticity flourishes and empathy thrives.

The Literature Times: How much of your own life or observations influenced the stories in this book?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: A lot. Some were less about friction and more about real narratives. Observations are great tools, at least for me, to develop a narrative.

The Literature Times: Why did you choose to focus specifically on women’s resilience?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: All the narratives are proportionately love-orientated, which is my forte of writing. The main protagonists are women, of course, as women are considered to be more vulnerable to emotions like love and understanding. Each piece of a woman’s heart holds a reason to fall in love. I am not saying men don’t fall in love, but women don’t fall easily, but once they do, there is no looking back. All they need is reassurance, and they can conquer their fears, read silence, and listen to the untold whispers. And yet after falling in love, they don’t give up. They rise once more, seeking a purpose to flourish with an abundance of hope.

The Literature Times: What role do support networks and community play in the journeys of the women featured in your book?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: Nothing is black and white. Similar are the characters of the support networks in the narratives. They are flawed and yet so real, you can resonate with them. To learn more, please read the narratives.

The Literature Times: What do you hope women take away from reading these narratives?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: A hope to restart. A hope to stand for themselves, without having the guilt of being wrong all the time. Let every woman feel that each one of them has a different perspective to look at life, where they are allowed to laugh, love, get angry, cry, and shatter and yet have the courage to restart and rise again.

The Literature Times: Did you face any challenges while writing Resilience Reborn, either emotionally or creatively? How did

Kamalika Bhattacharya: Not really. As many of the incidents inspired me to unfold the narratives in such a manner that might not be completely destructive for a woman, and she gets an opportunity to make a comeback from uncertain situations. She learns to act right in awkward situations and juggle responsibilities and yet try to settle and get over the chaos.

The Literature Times: Your past works focus on passion and love—how was the experience different while writing about strength and survival?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: When love is true, it gives us reasons to secretly rescue each other in our darkest hours; that’s why love is what you do and not what you say… Love holds a lot of things together. The concept of strength and survival is deeply connected to love and passion. If not anything, let it be self-love. Self-love is often the foundation upon which we build our resilience. It empowers us to face challenges head-on and to recognise that our worth is inherent, regardless of the circumstances we encounter.

The Literature Times: What’s next for you as a writer? Do you plan to continue exploring themes of emotional resilience and empowerment in your future work?

Kamalika Bhattacharya: Yes, of course, a new storyline is on its way. I am still working on it, and of course it is going to be filled with a lot of emotions, resilience, and a tweaked plot. I am excited to delve deeper into the complexities of human experience, weaving in fresh perspectives that resonate with readers. As I navigate this new journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own strength and find hope amidst challenges.
