“Where Science Meets Compassion to Transform Families Worldwide.”
Neel Preet: Can you tell us about your journey as a writer?
Neha Rai: “My journey as a writer began through my work as a Functional Gut Health Expert, where I encountered countless families searching for deeper answers beyond conventional approaches. Over time, I realized that many powerful connections between gut health, behaviour, cognition, and healing were often overlooked.
Whispers From The Gut was born from a desire to give voice to those silent connections — blending science, clinical experience, and compassion into a message that could educate, empower, and inspire. For me, writing is not just about sharing knowledge; it is about creating awareness and transforming perspectives on health and healing.”
Neel Preet: What first inspired you to start writing?
Neha Rai: “What first inspired me to start writing was the growing realization that many families were searching for answers that extended beyond conventional narratives. Through my clinical journey, I witnessed how profoundly gut health could influence behaviour, cognition, emotional regulation, and overall well-being — yet these conversations were rarely given the attention they deserved.
I felt compelled to translate complex scientific insights into something meaningful, compassionate, and accessible. Writing became a way for me to educate, advocate, and give a voice to the powerful connection between the gut, brain, and healing.”
Neel Preet: Was becoming an author always your dream?
Neha Rai: “Becoming an author was not initially a dream — it became a purpose. My journey began in the field of clinical nutrition and functional gut health, where I encountered countless stories that deserved to be heard and understood more deeply.
Over time, I realized that writing was the most powerful way to extend my knowledge beyond consultations and create a broader impact. Whispers From The Gut emerged from a genuine desire to educate, inspire, and bring awareness to the profound connection between gut health, behaviour, and healing.”
Neel Preet: Which writers or thinkers have influenced your work the most?
Neha Rai: “My work has been profoundly influenced by several pioneering thinkers and clinicians in the fields of gut health, functional medicine, and neurodevelopment. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS), greatly shaped my understanding of the gut-brain connection and its impact on autism and behaviour.
I have also been inspired by the work of Dr. Martha Herbert for her research on the whole-body approach to autism, and Dr. Alessio Fasano for his groundbreaking contributions to gut permeability and immune health.
Beyond science, thinkers like Dr. Bessel van der Kolk have deepened my perspective on how the body, nervous system, and emotional experiences are intricately interconnected. Their collective work has influenced my approach to healing — one that integrates science, compassion, and holistic understanding.”
Neel Preet: How has your personal life shaped your writing style and themes?
Neha Rai: “My personal and professional experiences have deeply shaped both my writing style and the themes I explore. Working closely with families navigating autism, behavioural challenges, and gut-related concerns has given me a profound understanding of the emotional, physical, and psychological dimensions of healing.
These experiences have made my writing empathetic, research-driven, and purpose-oriented. I strive to write in a way that not only educates, but also reassures and empowers readers. My themes often revolve around the gut-brain connection, holistic healing, neurodevelopment, and the importance of viewing health through a more integrative and compassionate lens.”
Neel Preet: What inspired the idea behind this book?
Neha Rai: “The inspiration behind Whispers From The Gut emerged from years of observing how profoundly gut health can influence behaviour, cognition, emotional regulation, and overall well-being — particularly in children with neurodevelopmental challenges.
I encountered countless families searching for answers beyond conventional explanations, and I felt there was a pressing need to bridge the gap between science, nutrition, and holistic healing. This book was born from a desire to create awareness, offer deeper insight into the gut-brain connection, and empower families with knowledge that could transform both understanding and outcomes.”
Neel Preet: What is the central message or theme of your work?
Neha Rai: “The central message of my work is that healing must be approached holistically. The body, gut, brain, behaviour, and emotional well-being are profoundly interconnected, yet these connections are often overlooked in conventional discussions around health and neurodevelopment.
Through my work, I aim to encourage a deeper understanding of the gut-brain axis and advocate for a more integrative, compassionate, and root-cause-oriented approach to healing. Ultimately, my goal is to empower families with knowledge, awareness, and hope.”
Neel Preet: How would you describe your book in one sentence?
Neha Rai: “Whispers From The Gut is a thought-provoking exploration of how the gut profoundly influences behaviour, cognition, and overall well-being, while advocating for a more holistic and compassionate approach to healing.”
Neel Preet: What makes this book unique compared to others in the same genre?
Neha Rai: “What distinguishes Whispers From The Gut is its integrative perspective — it does not view gut health, behaviour, cognition, and neurodevelopment as isolated concerns, but as deeply interconnected aspects of overall well-being. The book combines scientific insight, clinical experience, and compassionate storytelling to present a more holistic understanding of healing.
Rather than offering superficial solutions, it encourages readers to explore root causes, empowering families with knowledge that is both evidence-informed and profoundly human.”
Neel Preet: Did the story or concept evolve while you were writing it?
Neha Rai: “Yes, very much so. What began as an exploration of gut health gradually evolved into a much deeper conversation about the intricate relationship between the gut, brain, behaviour, emotions, and healing.
As I continued writing, I realized the book needed to go beyond clinical information and also reflect the emotional journeys of families seeking understanding and hope. That evolution made the work far more holistic, compassionate, and meaningful than I had initially envisioned.”
