What Will Be The Power Sources For The Vehicles In Future – Green Hydrogen Or Electric?

Well, with some constant & earnest efforts of reducing the carbon emissions and creating a safe as well as a sustainable ecosystem the talks of adopting non-polluting sources of energy has gained some real momentum. The targets set by each of the participated nations at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, popularly known as the ‘Paris Climate Accords’ or the continuous rise of the fuel price in the international market has changed our world to a great deal that too for something good. In the attempt to reduce the Carbon Emissions and save the common citizens from the ever-increasing price of the fuel cost, the Automobile Companies along with the assistance from the governments of various responsible nations have started to take some revolutionary steps!

India, which is a growing economy & a growing world power too, is often considered as a responsible nation in the global community and just as per the reputation, the Indian Government too has decided to reduce the carbon emission and preserve the natural ecosystem of the country! One of the vital step that the current Modi Government has taken in the direction of reducing the carbon emissions in India is to encourage the automobile companies to come up with Vehicles that uses any kind of the Renewable Energy Sources, which do not cause pollution or deplete the natural resources in any manner. As a result, the automobile companies very soon came up with the Electric Vehicles (EVs), since the basic blueprint of the EVs was already in progress as an alternative for the fuel consuming vehicles. While, along with the EVs the automobile companies soon came up with the concept of the Green Hydrogen Vehicles, also known as Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs).

As far as India is considered the talks of EVs and FCVs are much a reality as today itself we can see several EVs running on our roads, especially in the Two Wheeler Segment, while in the Four Wheeler Segment, TATA Nexon EV Model has become a common sight on the roads. Therefore, now the big question that arises is that what will be the Power Sources for the vehicles in future – Green Hydrogen or Electric? Well, it is not that simple to answer this question and so in this write-up, we shall analysis both the modes of power sources of the future vehicles, i.e. EVs and FCVs and only then we shall draw a conclusion. Now, the future of vehicles is likely to be a combination of different power sources, with green hydrogen and electric power being among the most promising!

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, as they produce zero emissions, along with being cheaper to operate and maintain than traditional gasoline vehicles, and are supported by government policies and incentives. Additionally, the development of battery technology is making EVs more practical for longer distance travel and the cost of batteries is also decreasing, which is making EVs even more accessible. Whereas, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs) also have several advantages. They can travel much further on a single tank of hydrogen than an EV can on a single charge and can be refuelled in a matter of minutes, similar to gasoline vehicles. Additionally, hydrogen can be used as a fuel source for heavy-duty vehicles, such as buses and trucks that may not be well suited to battery electric power.

However, the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is still in development phase, which is the main challenge for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to be more practical and widely used. Additionally, the production of hydrogen is still not very efficient and it is not yet as cost effective as it needs to be to be competitive with other fuel sources. Therefore, the choice between hydrogen and electric power will depend on factors such as infrastructure availability, cost, and the specific requirements of different types of vehicles. For example, in urban areas, where range and refuelling time are less important, battery-electric vehicles may be the preferred choice. In rural and remote areas, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles may be a better option because of the lack of charging infrastructure!

In conclusion, both green hydrogen and electric power sources have their own unique advantages and challenges and it is likely that we will see a combination of both in the future. Both technologies will continue to improve, and as the infrastructure for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles improves, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will become more practical and widely used in the future.
