The release of Echoes Beyond Silence, Dr. Sudarsan Mandal’s first collection of English poetry, marks a meaningful new chapter in the literary journey of a poet whose life has unfolded across medicine, public health, diverse cultures, and deeply personal experiences. More than a collection of poems, the book is an invitation to pause, reflect, and discover the universal emotions that connect people across languages, countries, and cultures. Through lyrical and contemplative verses, Dr. Mandal transforms ordinary observations and lived experiences into reflections on love, memory, solitude, longing, loss, hope, nature, and resilience.
The title Echoes Beyond Silence captures the essence of the collection. Silence, in these poems, is not an absence but a language of its own. It carries memories, emotions, questions, wounds, dreams, and stories that are often difficult to express in words. The poems explore what exists beneath the visible surface of everyday life—the words left unspoken, the love that continues to live in memory, the pain that gradually heals, the fleeting beauty of ordinary moments, and the hope that survives even during difficult times.
Rooted in Dr. Mandal’s Indian sensibility, the collection nevertheless speaks to a much wider human experience. His life journey has taken him from the rural landscapes of Bengal to cities across India and onward to different parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Canada. These varied geographical and cultural experiences have enriched his understanding of people, relationships, nature, and the complexities of human existence. The resulting poetry brings together external landscapes and inner journeys, allowing readers to move seamlessly between memories of places and reflections on the human heart.
One of the distinctive qualities of Echoes Beyond Silence is its accessibility. The poems do not seek to overwhelm readers with complexity; instead, they create intimate spaces for contemplation and recognition. Readers may encounter familiar emotions within unfamiliar settings, discovering fragments of their own experiences in the poet’s words. The collection reminds us that despite differences in language, geography, profession, and culture, emotions such as love, loneliness, longing, grief, hope, and resilience remain fundamentally universal.
Dr. Sudarsan Mandal brings an unusual and enriching perspective to literature through his professional life as a physician and public health expert. Born in a village in West Bengal, he spent nearly fourteen formative years surrounded by nature, simplicity, human relationships, and the rhythms of rural life. He later pursued medicine, completing his MBBS from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata, and his MD from the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Kolkata. With more than three decades of experience in public health, he has contributed to disease control and health policy while continuing to nurture his passion for poetry and literature.
Before Echoes Beyond Silence, Dr. Mandal established himself as a Bengali poet through collections including Shabder Michil and Rain Drenched Love (Brishti Bheja Prem). He has also contributed to several collaborative poetry anthologies published in India and Bangladesh. His poetry reflects emotional depth, compassion, introspection, philosophical sensitivity, and a deep appreciation of nature and human relationships.
With Echoes Beyond Silence, Dr. Mandal now opens his literary world to an international English-speaking readership. The collection gently encourages readers to slow down, look inward, and listen to the subtle voices that often remain unheard amid the noise of everyday life. Ultimately, the book celebrates the enduring power of poetry to cross cultural boundaries and reveal the shared humanity within us all. In its pages, silence becomes a voice, memory becomes an echo, and emotion becomes a bridge connecting one human heart to another.
