An Interview with – Dr. Rajshree Verma

The Literature Times: What inspired you to write Bandini: Iradon Ki Ek Kalajayi Yatra?
Dr. Rajshree Verma: The inspiration came from observing the silent struggles of women across generations—how their dreams often remain unspoken, yet never truly die. Bandini was born out of a desire to give voice to those emotions and to portray the quiet strength that transforms suffering into resilience.

The Literature Times: The novel spans three generations of women—Sarala, Vidya, and Aaradhana. How did you develop these characters?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: Each character represents a different phase of societal evolution. Sarala embodies silent endurance, Vidya reflects awakening and internal conflict, while Aaradhana symbolizes assertion and transformation. I developed them by blending real-life observations with emotional depth, ensuring each voice felt authentic and distinct.

The Literature Times: The theme of ‘Bandini’ reflects emotional and societal confinement. How do you interpret this concept in today’s context?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: Today, confinement is often less visible but still deeply present—through expectations, self-doubt, and societal pressures. Bandini suggests that true liberation begins internally, when a person recognizes their own worth and dares to redefine their identity.

The Literature Times: How has your background as a homeopathic doctor influenced your writing and character development?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: Homeopathy teaches you to listen beyond symptoms—to understand the emotional and psychological layers of a person. This perspective has deeply influenced my writing, allowing me to create characters with nuanced inner worlds and authentic emotional journeys.

The Literature Times: Your story moves from Muzaffarpur to a global perspective. What does this transition symbolize?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: The transition represents the universality of human emotions. While the roots remain grounded in a specific cultural setting, the struggles, aspirations, and transformations of the characters resonate beyond boundaries—showing that stories of resilience are global.

The Literature Times: Silence plays a powerful role in your narrative. What does silence represent in your book?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: Silence in Bandini is both a limitation and a language. It represents suppressed voices, unexpressed pain, but also inner strength and reflection. Sometimes, silence speaks louder than words—it carries truths that society often ignores.

The Literature Times: What challenges did you face while writing such an emotionally layered story?
Dr. Rajshree Verma: The biggest challenge was maintaining emotional authenticity without becoming overwhelming. Balancing depth with readability required careful structuring, and at times, revisiting intense emotions was personally demanding.

The Literature Times: How do you think modern readers, especially young women, will connect with this book?

Dr. Rajshree Verma: Young women today are navigating identity, independence, and expectations simultaneously. They will see reflections of their own struggles and aspirations in Aaradhana’s journey, and hopefully feel empowered to embrace their own voice.

The Literature Times: What message do you want readers to take away from Bandini?
Dr. Rajshree Verma: That no matter how confined one feels, the power to transform lies within. Bandini is ultimately a story of awakening—of realizing that strength is not given, it is discovered.

The Literature Times: Are you working on any upcoming projects or new books?
Dr. Rajshree Verma:Yes, I am currently working on an upcoming book titled Teesvan Dwar – Virasat ka Rahasya. This project explores the deeper connection between heritage, identity, and hidden truths that shape our present. It carries elements of mystery and introspection, while continuing my focus on human emotions and transformation. Through this narrative, I aim to take readers on a journey where the past unveils powerful answers for the future.
