The academic book Text Book of Pharmaceutical Engineering – I, authored by Dr. Monali R. Bhalerao, Dr. Pritam V. Juvatkar, and Ms. M. V. Muley, has been released as a valuable educational resource for undergraduate pharmacy students. Prepared according to the latest syllabus prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for B.Pharm. Third Semester, the book aims to strengthen students’ understanding of the fundamental principles and practical applications of pharmaceutical engineering. By combining theoretical knowledge with industry-oriented concepts, it provides a structured introduction to the engineering processes essential to pharmaceutical manufacturing and industrial pharmacy.
Pharmaceutical engineering plays a crucial role in transforming raw materials into finished pharmaceutical products while ensuring efficient processing, appropriate material handling, and effective utilization of resources. The book covers important topics, including fluid flow, size reduction, size separation, heat transfer, evaporation, distillation, drying, mixing, filtration, and centrifugation. It also discusses pharmaceutical plant construction materials, corrosion, corrosion prevention, plant layout, and environmental pollution prevention. These subjects help students understand the scientific principles behind pharmaceutical unit operations and their importance in manufacturing processes. To facilitate learning and examination preparation, the textbook includes illustrative diagrams, examples, tables, model calculations, long-answer questions, short-answer questions, and multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with answers. Its systematic presentation is intended to make complex concepts accessible and support students in developing the foundational knowledge required for their academic and professional journeys.
The book brings together the academic expertise and teaching experience of three pharmacy professionals. Dr. Monali R. Bhalerao is a Professor at Yadavrao Tasgaonkar Institute of Pharmacy, Chandhai, Bhivpuri Road, Karjat, Mumbai. She holds a Ph.D. from Sunrise University, an M.Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Sinhgad Institute of Pharmacy, Lonavala, Pune, and a B.Pharm. from Government College of Pharmacy, Aurangabad. With 14 years of experience in pharmacy education and one year of industrial experience, she has published more than 50 research papers in national and international journals and authored seven pharmacy books. Her professional development includes advanced certificate courses in pharmacovigilance, clinical data management, and clinical research. A life member of the Association of Pharmaceutical Teachers of India (APTI), New Delhi, she received the Bharat Gaurav Award in 2022, the Maharashtra Best Teacher Award in 2025, and the Maharashtra State Level Best Teacher Award in 2026.
Dr. Pritam Vijay Juvatkar serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry at AIMS College of Pharmacy, AIMS Foundation, Vadavli, Dombivli, Maharashtra, affiliated with the University of Mumbai. He also serves as an Assistant Administrator at the AIMS Foundation. He earned his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and completed his M.Pharm. with distinction in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry from KLE Society’s College of Pharmacy, Belgaum, Karnataka. His academic background and experience in pharmaceutical education contribute to the multidisciplinary foundation of this textbook.
Ms. M. V. Muley is an Assistant Professor at Gahlot Institute of Pharmacy, Kopar Khairane, Navi Mumbai. She holds an M.Pharm. in Quality Assurance from Sharad Pawar College of Pharmacy, Wanadongri, Nagpur, and has six years of experience in undergraduate pharmacy education. Her teaching experience and specialization in quality assurance complement the book’s emphasis on systematic processes, technical understanding, and pharmaceutical industry practices.
