High end equipment in NMIMS Pharma-Tech lab helps students start their company while completing their studies.

The Pharma industry has been undergoing drastic changes and the main reason for this is Globalisation. To match such rapid changes in the industry, it is very important to make Pharmacy students be future-ready to face the challenges of a global market. The renowned Shobhaben Pratapbhai Patel School Of Pharmacy & Technology Management (SPPSPTM), part of SVKM’s NMIMS, brings in advanced lab equipment for its students, making them industry-ready at the very beginning of their career.

The school has installed one-of-its-kind labs where the students exercise their theoretical knowledge along with the practical research. Based on which two of the NMIMS pharmacy students launched their own skincare product names “FABBUE” under the guidance of their faculty. It allows the customers to get their skin analysed and place orders on their official website. All of these products are dermatologically verified and allow its customers to select the products according to their skin needs.

Recently,  SPPSPTM has been ranked number one in the private pharmacy schools in the state and has improved its ranking positions by climbing three digits up to 11th place from the last year’s rank by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).

A few equipments which help the students work in an environment like the pharma industry are listed below:

1. LCMSMS – Drugs Analysis: This highly equipped machine helps to identify the correct number of drugs used in medicine. It also measures the smallest biological macromolecules used in any medicine.

2. CIL – Nano Units Measuring: The central instrument laboratory (CIL) is used to measure High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system, Gas Chromatography (GC) system, High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) system, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Flash Chromatography, UV spectrophotometer, Polarimeter, Colorimeter, etc.

3. Animal House – Testing on animals: The Animal Facility has three rooms, one experimental area, washing area, and quarantine room. The quarantine room and animal rooms are maintained under controlled conditions of temperatures.

4. Pilot plant – different types and shapes of drugs created in this lab: Pilot Plant is equipped with High-Pressure Homogenizer, Spray Drier, Rapid Mixer Granulator, Fluid Bed Processor, Extruder Spheronizer, Tablet Compression Machine, and Tablet Coater to name a few. The types of equipment were procured in view of pilot scale batches for industrial projects.Dr. Bala Prabhakar, Dean, SPPSPTM, NMIMS, said,“The world has been gripped by modern technology everywhere. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. These high-tech labs will promote the idea of self-learning among students and enable them to achieve better academic growth. It is admirable that our students are starting their company while completing their studies. Our tech lab gives students first-hand experience to conduct their experiments, develops the skills needed for research, teaches them to tackle challenges, and helps teachers develop creative teaching methods. We will continue to innovate like this and help our students gain real-world experience. “
