A graduate in Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering from NIT Raipur, he is currently pursuing his MBA at SPJIMR Mumbai, where he continues to explore the intersection of logic, leadership, and creative vision.

Neel Preet: What inspired you to create the world of The Awakening Flame, and how did the idea for Kaelen’s character first come to you?
Aayush Mandal: The world of The Awakening Flame was born from my fascination with mythology, philosophy, and the eternal conflict between light and darkness. Growing up, I was deeply inspired by stories from Greek mythology, Biblical lore, and epic fantasy worlds where destiny carries both beauty and tragedy. I wanted to create a universe where celestial beings, fallen powers, and mortals coexist in a fragile balance, while still keeping the emotional core deeply human.
Kaelen’s character came to me as someone who was never searching for greatness, yet was chosen by it. I was drawn to the idea of a young man carrying something ancient and dangerous within him while struggling to understand who he truly is. At his core, Kaelen represents the fear many people experience when confronting their own potential—the fear that the power within us might either save the world or destroy it.
Neel Preet: Kaelen struggles with powers he neither understands nor fully controls. What drew you to explore this theme of destiny versus free will?
Aayush Mandal: I believe one of the greatest questions in life is whether we shape our destiny or whether destiny shapes us. That conflict became central to Kaelen’s journey. He is constantly torn between accepting what the world expects him to become and deciding for himself who he truly wants to be.
What interested me most was the emotional burden of destiny. Fantasy stories often glorify chosen heroes, but I wanted to explore the weight behind that responsibility—the fear, isolation, doubt, and sacrifice that come with being chosen. Kaelen’s fire is not simply power; it is a test of identity. His journey asks whether a person is defined by fate, by their past, or by the choices they make despite both.
Neel Preet: Friendship plays a crucial role in the story through characters like Caleb, Lysandra, Stephany, and Dorian. How important are these relationships to Kaelen’s journey?
Aayush Mandal: They are absolutely essential. Kaelen’s strength does not come solely from the fire within him; it comes from the people who stand beside him. Every member of the fellowship reflects a different aspect of his humanity. Caleb represents loyalty and brotherhood, Lysandra brings wisdom and emotional understanding, Stephany becomes a source of hope and emotional grounding, while Dorian embodies resilience and inner conflict.
I wanted the story to show that even the strongest individuals cannot survive alone. In a world filled with gods, devils, and war, it is friendship, trust, and sacrifice that keep the characters human. The fellowship is not simply a team—it is a family forged through hardship, loss, and faith in one another.
Neel Preet: The novel blends fantasy, mystery, and emotional conflict. How did you balance these elements while writing the story?
Aayush Mandal: For me, emotional truth always came first. No matter how grand the mythology or action became, I wanted readers to remain emotionally connected to the characters. The fantasy creates the scale of the story, the mystery creates curiosity, but the emotional conflict is what gives the journey meaning.
While writing, I focused on ensuring that every revelation, battle, or mythological element also carried emotional consequences for the characters. I wanted readers to feel both the wonder of discovering ancient worlds and the emotional weight of the sacrifices being made within them. Balancing these elements was challenging, but it also became one of the most rewarding parts of writing the novel.
Neel Preet: Kaelen’s fire is both a gift and a burden. What does this power symbolize in the larger context of the novel?
Aayush Mandal: Kaelen’s fire symbolizes potential, transformation, and destruction all at once. Fire can illuminate darkness, provide warmth, and inspire hope, but it can also consume everything in its path. That duality mirrors human nature itself.
In the larger context of the story, the fire represents the idea that power is never inherently good or evil—it depends on the heart of the one who wields it. Kaelen’s struggle is not simply about mastering his abilities; it is about mastering himself. The flame becomes a metaphor for anger, fear, hope, purpose, and ultimately rebirth.
Neel Preet: Many characters react differently to Kaelen’s abilities—some with admiration, others with fear. Were you exploring broader themes about society’s response to those who are different?
Aayush Mandal: Yes, very much so. Throughout history, people who possess something extraordinary – whether talent, knowledge, power, or simply a different identity—have often been admired and feared at the same time. I wanted Kaelen’s journey to reflect that reality.
Many characters project their own hopes, fears, and insecurities onto him. Some see him as a savior, others as a threat, and some as a weapon to control. In many ways, the story explores how society responds to individuals it cannot fully understand. I think that fear of the unknown is something deeply human, and fantasy allows us to explore those emotions on a much larger scale.
Neel Preet: The mystery surrounding names like Nyxara and the origins of Kaelen’s powers creates strong suspense. How did you develop the mythology behind your world?
Aayush Mandal: The mythology developed gradually over a long period of imagination, research, and worldbuilding. I drew inspiration from multiple mythological traditions, ancient scriptures, folklore, and philosophical ideas about creation, divinity, and chaos. Rather than copying any one mythology directly, I tried to reinterpret those influences into something original and interconnected.
Characters like Nyxara were designed to feel ancient, mysterious, and symbolic of forces far older than humanity itself. I wanted the world to feel layered—as though every relic, prophecy, and forgotten name carried centuries of hidden history behind it. Much of the suspense comes from the idea that the characters are uncovering truths that were never meant to be discovered.
Neel Preet: Which character was the most challenging or enjoyable for you to write, and why?
Aayush Mandal: Kaelen was both the most challenging and the most rewarding character to write. Since the story is deeply tied to his emotional and spiritual journey, I had to ensure that his struggles felt authentic and relatable despite the epic scale of the world around him. Writing his moments of doubt, rage, hope, and sacrifice required a great deal of emotional honesty.
At the same time, characters like Dorian and Nyxara were incredibly enjoyable to write because they carry so much inner complexity. Dorian walks the line between strength and vulnerability, while Nyxara represents a darker, more philosophical form of conflict. I enjoy writing characters who are shaped by pain, belief, and difficult choices rather than simple notions of good and evil.
Neel Preet: What message do you hope young fantasy readers take away from Kaelen’s struggles, choices, and growth?
Aayush Mandal: I hope readers understand that strength is not the absence of fear or pain—it is the courage to continue despite them. Kaelen’s journey is ultimately about growth, resilience, and learning to confront the darkness within oneself without losing hope.
I also hope readers realize that nobody overcomes life alone. Friendship, faith, sacrifice, and compassion are just as important as power. Even in the darkest moments, there is always meaning in choosing to protect others and keep moving forward. If readers finish the book feeling inspired to believe in themselves despite uncertainty, then I would consider that the greatest success as a storyteller.
Neel Preet: As this is only the beginning of Kaelen’s journey, what can readers look forward to in the next installment of the series?
Aayush Mandal: The next installment will take readers far beyond the events of The Awakening Flame and into a world where the stakes become truly mythological in scale. What begins as a battle against a fallen celestial will gradually evolve into a conflict involving forces far older and far more dangerous than anyone realizes.
Readers can expect the unveiling of ancient secrets hidden since the dawn of creation, the awakening of legendary powers, and encounters with figures whose names have long existed only in myth and prophecy. Mysterious beings such as the Fallen Angel General Azazel, the enigmatic Devil King Lucifer, the mighty Archangel Gabriel, and the charismatic yet unpredictable Asmodeus will all play important roles in shaping the future of Kaelen’s world.
The story will also delve deeper into the origins of the celestial and infernal realms while introducing terrifying new threats. Ancient Titans imprisoned since forgotten ages will begin to stir, and the shadow of Leviathan—one of the most feared entities in existence—will loom over the fate of gods, mortals, and devils alike. Yet beyond even these legendary forces lies a far greater mystery: whispers of an ancient primordial entity known as Azael’Thar, a name spoken only in fragments of prophecy and forbidden lore. As forgotten truths emerge, the characters will begin to realize that the battles they have fought so far may only be the opening moves in a much larger war.
Readers will witness powerful alliances, devastating betrayals, and conflicts that challenge everything the characters believe about destiny, faith, and sacrifice.
